With every new year comes a slew of different resolutions ranging from cutting back to getting inspired. One of the most common resolutions however, has less to do with yourself and more to do with your surroundings – getting organized. Getting your home and other personal spaces organized can yield a variety of positive long lasting outcomes, some examples being making you less overwhelmed and more motivated to get tasks done while also heightening your overall mood. Getting organized is easier said than done, which is why too often people ditch their resolution to put a little more effort into tidying up – but we’re here to help. Read on to see Bulkea’s tips on how to get organized and stay organized for the new year (or any time of the year really).

Downsize

Organizing your space can be a lot easier when you have less items to work with. However, actually identifying the clutter tends to be one of the most difficult aspects of downsizing – sometimes you don’t realize you are holding onto things that you just don’t need.

To downsize effectively, target items that you have more than one of – do you really need 20 pairs of jeans, or could you whittle it down to 10? Use this methodology with everything in your home, from office supplies to clothing. Another downsizing tactic is to ask yourself if you really need something, or if it is time for you to let it go. There are definitely items that hold an irreplaceable sentimental value, but there are others that although they bring back fond memories, it isn’t completely necessary to hold onto them. If you think you might have a bad habit of not letting things go, consider taking pictures of items you can live without and putting them in a photo album so you can easily reminisce without the clutter.

Once you have selected all of the things that you no longer need, either donate them or dispose of them accordingly.

Set Steady Goals

Now that you’ve downsized you have a clean slate to work with that is just waiting to be organized. Set goals for your spaces and how you want them to be organized. Keep in mind to get the full benefits of being organized,  you should be aiming to organize every space in your life rather than an isolated area like your work desk. Rather than getting too eager and organizing all of your spaces at once, focus on one area at a time – like tackling your closet before the bathroom. Through doing this you will be less overwhelmed that will make the entire process a lot more fun.

Constantly remind yourself of the end goal and what you hope to achieve through organizing. This will serve as the extra push you need to continue organizing rather than throwing in the towel.

 Hold Yourself Accountable

Hold yourself accountable to the goals you just set for yourself by creating reasonable deadlines to adhere to. A good rule of thumb is to give yourself a month to completely re-organize your space, but don’t stress and give yourself a little more time if you aren’t able to make it (when you’re really trying to). Another great way of holding yourself accountable is enlisting the help of family and friends by telling them of your resolution and asking if they could help you with ideas on how to organize or get their hands dirty and actually help you clean up and organize. When other people know about your goals, you feel more inclined to accomplish them.

Weekly Maintenance

Once you’ve finally finished organizing your spaces, the most important thing is to ensure that the organization is maintained, which will involve you having to change your habits, lifestyle and the way you look at things. Make it a point to reorganize at the end of every day anything that has gone out of place as an evening ritual. If you live with others, ask them to help you maintain what you worked so hard for and make sure if they move something to put it back, or if they see something out of place to fix it. This method is best suitable for maintaining your home because it is easier to fix smaller things rather than large messes. If you’re too busy to re-organize at the end of every day, aim for once a week maximum.
